Updated College Football Program Rankings

The 2011 College Football season is here! And, right on cue, we post our own rankings of college football's top-division programs. Rankings are based on a combination of tradition (historical success) and recent success. 99 years of data were included in these rankings - the entire history of the modern era of college football clear back to 1912, which was the first year touchdowns were awarded six points and teams were given four downs instead of three. We've also calculated what our program rankings would have been at the end of each season (or entering the next season - whichever you prefer) to create an instant history for the rankings stretching clear back to 1912.

So, what is the result of all of this analysis? For the sixth straight year, Ohio State is the top college football program in America, according to our analysis. Oklahoma moves up one spot from third to second from last year, and Alabama moves up two spots to complete the top three.

Here is the complete list of the latest program rankings:

College Football Top Division Conference Top-to-Bottom Power Rankings

With the 2011 College Football Season ready to start - the 100th season of the modern college football era - conference realignment seems to be the topic of the day. Heading into this season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers switch from the Big 12 Conference to the Big 10. Colorado leaves the Big 12 and Utah leaves the Mountain West Conference to join the PAC 10, which is now named the PAC 12. BYU also leaves the Mountain West Conference to go independent, just as Boise State joins the MWC. Already, TCU is set to join the Big East next season (leaving the MWC).

What is the result of all of these changes? Which conferences compare to the others better top-to-bottom than they did before this year's changes and which conferences have lost ground? Not surprisingly, our analysis shows that the Big 10, with its acquisition of Nebraska is the biggest winner and the WAC and Big 12 are the biggest losers.

Entering the 2011 season, here is how the conferences rank after analyzing and comparing the strength of their member programs top-to-bottom:

1. SEC
2. Big Ten
3. PAC 12
4. ACC
5. Big 12
6. Big East
7. MWC
8. CUSA
9. WAC
10. MAC
11. Sun Belt

If the programs mentioned above had remained in their same conferences instead of moving, the rankings would have been:

1. SEC
2. PAC 12 (which would have remained the PAC 10)
3. Big 12
4. Big Ten
5. ACC
6. Big East
7. MWC
8. CUSA
9. WAC
10. MAC
11. Sun Belt

In terms of the change in their ratings due to the conference realignment, six conferences improved, while five saw a decrease in their rating. (Remember that these ratings are in part a result of a comparison to other conferences, so a conference may have actually improved, but because of the nature of that improvement - not improving in areas where the conference is weakest, for example - and due to improvements in other conferences, their resulting rating might actually have been lower. Likewise, making no changes can still result in a ratings increase or decrease because of changes in other conferences.)

The conferences who saw improvement in their ratings in order from the largest improvement to the smallest are:

1. Big Ten
2. MWC
3. CUSA
4. Big East
5. MAC
6. Sun Belt

The conferences whose ratings decreased because of realignment from the largest decrease to smallest are:

1. WAC
2. Big 12
3. PAC 12
4. ACC
5. SEC

With rumors of additional changes on the horizon - Texas A&M and perhaps one other program possibly joining the SEC, replacement programs being invited to the Big 12, etc. - we will keep our eye on these potential changes and post an analysis of how these changes affect conference ratings as these things develop further.

Most Successful College Football Programs of the 20's (1921-1930)

Twice national champions and with eight top five finishes (out of ten possible years) in our analyses, the team of the decade for the years 1921-1930, was clearly the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The only team that came close to having as successful a decade was the USC Trojans, whose first year competing with a top-division college football team was 1922, but they still managed to have a top-eight finish for ten straight years starting in 1924 (only seven of which count for the decade of the 20's), including Baggaley national championships in 1928, 1931, 1932 and 1933 (although, again, the last three championships belong to the decade of the 30's).

1921 College Football Final Rankings

The college football season is getting really close. The first game of the 2011 season begins on Thursday, September 1st at 6:00 PM EST when Louisville hosts Murray State. We have finished our analyses of the modern college football era, going back to the 1912 season, which was the first season in which college football teams were given four downs per possession, six points for a touchdown and three points for a field goal. We probably won't have all of the results posted before the first game of the season, but that is really just academic, since we won't begin posting our weekly rankings for 2011 until week three or four anyway. We do plan on posting our updated program rankings entering the 2011 season (based on our unique formula that balances recent team performance with historical success in college football's top division) this coming Wednesday. Spread the word and make sure to come back and see where your team ranks heading into the 100th season of college football's modern era.

Today's rankings are for the 1921 season. In many of these early years, there was no single national championship awarded. Okay, to be honest, that's kind of true today ... but even more so back then. In fact, five different teams were recognized as potentially national champions of the 1921 season. To illustrate how early 1921 is in college football history, 1921 was the first season in which a college football game was broadcast on radio. Because there weren't a whole lot of cross-regional games and even the number of games that different teams played varied greatly, the analysis of these early years is shakier than the others. Our system performs best when there are more games and especially games between teams from different conferences and regions. Regardless, our analysis declares that Notre Dame had the best season in 1921, which ironically is not one of the five teams mentioned above. (Notre Dame wasn't even undefeated, although seven other teams were. The Fighting Irish lost 10-7 at Iowa, which was undefeated and ended up #10 in our analysis. Iowa's ranking was hurt by close games against #37 Illinois and especially against #98 Purdue, both of which had losing records.)

Here are our final rankings for 1921:

1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-1) - 1.8
2. Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-1) - 2.7
3. Cornell Big Red (8-0) - 3.8
4. Penn State Nittany Lions (8-0-2) - 4.2

1922 College Football Final Rankings

With multiple undefeated teams and no clear way to determine a national champion - okay, not even polls, which aren't exactly clear themselves - 1922 is a season for which there is very little agreement about who had the best season. Our analysis agrees with the National Championship Foundation which retroactively declared the California Golden Bears national champion. Other polls have retroactively picked Cornell (our #2) Drake (our #18) and Princeton (our #10).

1925 College Football Final Rankings

After a short vacation, we're back with our historic rankings for 1925. In 1925, the Alabama Crimson Tide beat the Washington Huskies in the Rose Bowl by a single point. It was the first time a Southern team had been invited to play in the Rose Bowl - this was well before the tradition was established of having the PAC-10 champion face the Big Ten Champion. Both teams rate high in our ratings. In fact, our analysis shows that Alabama had the best season of any team in the nation.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (10-0) - 1.3
2. Dartmouth Big Green (8-0) - 1.8
3. Washington Huskies (10-1-1) - 4.2
4. Michigan Wolverines (7-1) - 4.3
(tie) USC Trojans (11-2) - 4.3
6. Tulane Green Wave (9-0-1) - 5.1
7. Florida Gators (8-2) - 9.1

1927 College Football Final Rankings

1927 was the first year in which the goal posts were moved to the end of the end zone instead of the goal line. The Illinois Illini were declared national champions under the Dickinson System. Stanford met Alabama for the second year in a row in the Rose Bowl (after the two teams had tied 7-7 the previous year) and won the game 7-6. However, the team our analysis shows had the best season that year was only ranked #11 in the Dickinson System and wasn't even considered for the Rose Bowl - the Texas A&M Aggies. Ironically, Illinois is ranked #11 in our analysis. Even more surprisingly, the Rose Bowl competitors end up ranked 41st (Alabama) and 48th (Stanford).

1929 College Football Final Rankings

Our national champion for 1929 does not even show up anywhere in the ranking systems of the time. Yet the Utah Utes of 1929 won all of their games by an average score of 31-3. Perhaps because they only played teams from the Rocky Mountains - it was 1929 after all, and transportation wasn't anything like it is today - the Utes did not capture much national attention, despite their gaudy performance, which even outshines their undefeated seasons in 2004 and 2008. Although they went undefeated and untied, they weren't even ranked in the Top 11 by the Dickinson System, which granted its national championship to - who else? - Notre Dame. There were three other undefeated and untied teams in 1929 - Notre Dame, Purdue and Tulane, but none of them had quite as dominating as season, in our analysis, as the Utah Utes.

Most Successful College Football Programs of the 30's (1931-1940)

USC had the best season in the country for three straight years, 1931-1933. However, a decade is ten years long, and the Trojans did not follow it up with seven more strong seasons. In fact, the Trojans had sub-.500 seasons three of the next seven years and only end up ranked #13 among programs of the 1930's. Our team of the decade is Alabama, which only had one season ranked number one, but six seasons in the top ten and all ten seasons in the top 25. Close behind is the Tennessee Volunteers, who had seven seasons finishing in the top ten, including two ranked #1, but also went 4-5 in 1935 to drop out of the top spot.
