1964 College Football Final Rankings
In 1964, both Alabama and Arkansas finished the regular season undefeated. Alabama lost its bowl game, while Arkansas won. However, because of the way the polling system worked in 1964, Alabama remained the national champion. (There was no voting after the bowls.) Looking back, which team should actually have won the national title? How about a tie for the championship between Arkansas and ... Notre Dame? That's what our analysis shows:
1. Arkansas Razorbacks (11-0) - 1.6
(tie) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-1) - 1.6
3. Alabama Crimson Tide (10-1) - 3.4
4. Princeton Tigers (9-0) - 4.3
5. Michigan Wolverines (9-1) - 4.9
6. Texas Longhorns (10-1) - 5.7
7. Florida State Seminoles (9-1-1) - 7.8
8. Utah Utes (9-2) - 8.5
9. Bowling Green Falcons (9-1) - 9.3
10. Tulsa Golden Hurricane (9-2) - 10.1
11. Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-2) - 10.3

1965 College Football Final Rankings
1965 was one of those years that would have driven the BCS formula crazy. Going into the bowls, four different teams were undefeated - Michigan State, Nebraska, Arkansas and Dartmouth. (Dartmouth, as an Ivy League school, is problematic for our analysis because Ivy League schools played fewer games than everyone else, and of course, most of these games were against each other. Typically those teams would only schedule two non-conference games and those were usually against smaller, weaker schools - even lower division schools. As a result, it is very difficult to rank an Ivy League school that went undefeated, especially if they won many of their games by a large margin, as Dartmouth did.)
None of the previously referred to undefeated teams played each other in bowl games, and amazingly after the bowls were over, the only remaining undefeated team was Dartmouth (the Ivy League school), which didn't play in a bowl game. All three of the other teams had lost their bowl game. The human polls ended up crowning Alabama, which had one loss and one tie, as the national champion (and Alabama wasn't even one of the undefeated teams heading into the bowls). Did they get it right? Here is what our analysis shows:
1. Michigan State Spartans (10-1) - 1.5
2. Dartmouth Big Green (9-0) - 1.9
3. Alabama Crimson Tide (9-1-1) - 3.2

1966 College Football Final Rankings
We continue our historical rankings project with 1966. 1966 was famous for "The Tie" - a "game of the century" between #1 ranked Notre Dame and #2 ranked Michigan State on November 12th that ended in a tie. In the final polls, Notre Dame was ranked 1st and Michigan State was 2nd. But since the teams tied in their only head-to-head contest (a game played in East Lansing), which team actually had the better season? And what about undefeated, untied Alabama that started the season ranked #1 in the preseason polls?
