Week 15 - 2013 College Football Rankings

One game is left in the regular season: Army vs. Navy next week. But that game should only have a minimal impact on the rankings, so we can say that the following is pretty close to what the rankings will look like going into bowl season. Soon we'll be putting out our annual version of what the BCS game matchups should be as well as setting up our rankings-informed predictions for bowl season (where we typically outperform over 90% of all participants).

Things ended up pretty close as far as the actual championship game goes. It makes sense that with Auburn winning the head-to-head matchup that they should be in the game, not Alabama as our rankings show. However, imagine if the order of weeks had been a little different and that Auburn had beaten Alabama earlier in the year only to lose to LSU a week or two before the SEC Championship game. With that order of things, it is conceivable that Alabama would in fact be in the championship game. Because our system of analysis essentially treats all games equally, regardless of the order in which they were played, the results are not biased by "what has happened lately." Here are the rankings after 15 weeks of games:

1. Florida State Seminoles (13-0) - 1.0

Week 14 - 2013 College Football Rankings

By virtue of its last second once-in-a-generation play loss to Auburn, Alabama is officially out of consideration for the national title game and therefore the national championship. Sports pages everywhere are asking which should be the second team in, an undefeated Ohio State that barely survived against a Michigan team that we have ranked #42 or a one-loss SEC team like Missouri or Auburn. Well, if that is the question, our current vote has to go with one-loss Missouri over Ohio State but undefeated Ohio State over one-loss Auburn (but we reserve the right to change that opinion based on the results of next weekend's games). We currently have Missouri ranked #3, Ohio State #4 and Auburn, even with the wacky win over Alabama, still a distant #7 (which is actually quite a jump up with them, since we had them at #13 last week). Other one-loss teams include Baylor at #5, Oklahoma State tied with Auburn for #7 and Michigan State at #12. But note that NONE of those teams is ranked #2. Why not? Our rankings are based on the totality of the season, not just what happened last week or even in the last few weeks. Of all the one-loss teams, the one with the best loss (and the best set of wins) is still Alabama, and our analysis shows that one freaky play just is not enough to knock them out of the top two. Of course, we already had Florida State ranked at a solid #1, and it's nice to see the rest of the country come around on that one. Here are the complete rankings after 14 weeks:

1. Florida State Seminoles (12-0) - 1.0

Week 12 - 2013 College Football Rankings

Miami lost yet again, dropping to #43 after being in the top ten three weeks ago. This weakened Florida State's strength of schedule further, but that was more than made up for by Alabama's too close victory over #62 Mississippi State. According to their rankings, the Crimson Tide should have won in a blowout, but instead they only beat the Bulldogs 20-7, which was enough to drop them out of what had been a tie for first place with the Seminoles. Still, things are tight, and anything can happen to change the standings, which seem to experience big changes at the top practically every week, even though the top teams are winning most of the games. Week 11 - 2013 College Football Rankings

Oregon's annual loss to the Stanford Cardinal hasn't always hurt them in our rankings in the past. This year, however, the Ducks didn't have a sizeable lead in the rankings as in past years - in fact, they were ranked #2 going into the week. Now they are #4. Meanwhile, Alabama's victory over #14 LSU (who didn't even drop in the rankings after the loss) combined with the weakening of Florida State's position through losses by teams they have previously beaten (like Miami's 42-24 loss to Virginia Tech) was enough to bring the Crimson Tide into a tie for first place with the Seminoles. With six undefeated teams remaining, and none of them scheduled to actually play each other until bowl season, it's going to be a tight competition right to the end of the year. Here are the complete standings for Week 11:

Week 5 - 2013 College Football Rankings

Five weeks into the 2013 college football season, we have a pretty good idea of which teams are good and which teams are probably going to struggle all season long. It's no surprise that the top-ranked team, yet again, is Alabama. The Crimson Tide already have impressive victories over #11 Texas A&M, #35 Virginia Tech and #39 Ole Miss - in each case, the only loss that those teams have suffered so far this year. #2 might be a bit of surprise to some people, since Washington is only ranked as high as #15 in the human polls right now, but the Huskies have big victories over #24 Arizona and at #25 Illinois, the only losses those teams have suffered, while other undefeated teams have not faced as difficult of challenges yet. One of the advantages of a computer analysis-based ranking is that the analysis is based entirely on performance this year, not on pre-conceived ideas of how good a team might be or pre-season rankings that handicap some teams while anointing others with rankings they haven't yet earned. The ranking does not predict that the Huskies would beat some of these other unbeaten teams if they played them, it only says that they have proven more so far this season - that they've had a better season so far.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0) - 1.6

Week 4 - 2013 College Football Rankings

The 2013 college football season is in full swing. One of the nice things about using a computer analysis to rank teams is that you really can go back into the past and rank them as if any of the following weeks had not yet happened. Last week, due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to post our Week 4 rankings. So, here they are - exactly as they would have been a week ago. Final 2012 College Football Rankings

Well, the only thing the bowls proved is that we were right all along. The best two teams weren't playing each other in the championship game. It should have been Oregon vs. Alabama. And, after a couple of blowouts in their respective bowls, it's clear that Oregon and Alabama are the best two teams in the country. Which one had the better season? According to our analysis, even though because of who they lost to and when they lost to them, the Oregon Ducks are not the PAC-12 champions, they are the Baggaley National Champions once again. People talk about Alabama's "dynasty" but in the Baggaley rankings, there are two dynasties, as over the last four years, Alabama has been ranked #1 in the final rankings twice and Oregon has been ranked #1 twice.

How does this affect our program rankings and our historic rankings? We'll be updating all of that in the next couple of weeks.

Here are our final rankings for the 2012 College Football Season:
