2015 College Football Bowl Season - Most Intriguing Matchups

Each year we rank the bowls based on a measure we call "intrigue". Basically, what this means is that we look at each game and analyze, based on the performance of the two teams involved in the game, the relative chance that the game will play out to be a close game between two very good teams. It's a mixture of a measure of the quality of the teams involved and also how closely matched they are. Here are the results of our analysis of the 40 bowl games in the 2015/2016 bowl season:

2015 College Football Rankings - Week 14

According to our analysis, the four teams that had the best season this year were Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma. Three of those teams will be in the College Football Playoff this year. Ohio State will not, and it's hard to disagree with the committee on this one. Ohio State didn't win its conference, by virtue of its loss to Michigan State. Conference championships should matter. However, Michigan State's loss to Nebraska (who isn't even bowl eligible) is problematic for the Spartans. The committee will probably overlook it and put them in the playoff. Our analysis says that PAC-12 champion Stanford, even with two losses is more deserving. Stanford's two losses were to Oregon (ranked #24 in our analysis) and Northwestern (ranked #28). They also have a win over Notre Dame (ranked #6), which our analysis also shows to be more deserving of being in the playoff. Michigan State comes in at #7.

2015 College Football Rankings - Week 13

Rather than having one team separate themselves from the rest, as usually happens as the season wears on, the race at the top of the standings is just getting tighter every week. This week, it couldn't get any tighter, as Clemson and Alabama both tie for the top spot in our analysis. Meanwhile, still undefeated Iowa actually dropped to 11th, after beating now-#52 Nebraska 28-20, making this week's Big Ten championship game between them and #8 Michigan State an interesting matchup, considering that #3 Ohio State still shows as the team with the best season in the conference, despite being locked out of the conference title game, because they lost the head-to-head game, and therefore the tiebreaker, to the Spartans. Michigan State has got to be kicking themselves for that one-point loss to Nebraska (who is not even bowl eligible).

2015 College Football Rankings - Week 12

After a loss by Ohio State and a game that was far closer than it ought to have been for Notre Dame, there are two new teams in the top four this week. Baylor is back in it, after a very good win over previously unbeaten Oklahoma State, and Navy comes in at number four, having blown out most of the teams they have played this year. The Navy-Notre Dame comparison is especially intriguing, because Notre Dame beat Navy head-to-head, and you would expect that if Navy was to be higher ranked, it would be because Notre Dame has a bad loss or two, but the Fighting Irish have only lost one game, on the road to undefeated Clemson, which cannot be classified as a bad loss. Instead, our analysis shows that Navy's wins are that much better than Notre Dame's other wins, which tend to be a little bit closer than they ought to be if the Fighting Irish want to be in the playoff. Notre Dame's upcoming game against #8 Stanford looms big if they want to justify a place in the top four again.

In another interesting side note, there are only two undefeated teams remaining - Clemson and the Iowa Hawkeyes that - because of their close games against a relatively week schedule - still come in at #9, even behind two-loss Stanford. Meanwhile, the PAC-12 South champion, the winner of next week's USC-UCLA rivalry game, is currently outside of the Top 25, meaning that it is possible, although certainly they would move up if they did beat Stanford in the PAC-12 Championship Game, for the PAC-12 representative to the Rose Bowl to not even be ranked.

In week nine, the top four teams remain the same, although the order shuffled a little bit, and now it's Clemson that is putting pressure on (and nearly passing) Baylor for the top spot. 2015 College Football Rankings - Week 8

It appears that staying undefeated is beginning to mean more. For the first time in a few weeks, all of the top four spots in our analysis are taken by teams with no losses. If you need any more proof, ask the Utah Utes, who were ranked in our top four last week but lost big to a very low ranked USC team this weekend. As a result, the Utes dropped all the way to #19, while the Trojans jumped way up to #22 (from #37 last week). Baylor did manage to maintain the top spot this week, but has less of a stranglehold on that position as LSU, which climbed to #2 from #5 last week, is closing the gap quickly after beating Western Kentucky 48-20. The Hilltoppers had only lost one game before facing the Tigers and had climbed all the way up to #26 in our rankings last week.

2015 College Football Rankings - Week 7

The instability of the 2015 season continued in week 7, as once again, Baylor jumped up to the top spot in our rankings, following Michigan's crazy last-second loss to Michigan State. Ohio State also made a jump up to the #2 spot after a convincing  blowout victory over (currently) #39 Penn State. Michigan's loss was just as damaging to Utah, which dropped to the #4 spot, despite beating (currently) #51 Arizona State 34-18 - the 16-point victory not quite being enough to qualify as a "blowout", at least as defined in our analysis algorithm. What Michigan has done since week one is impressive - really impressive. In fact, it's so impressive that even that close first week loss to Utah is not enough to keep us from putting the Wolverine's at the top of our rankings for week six - and that with a number of undefeated teams still remaining. 2015 College Football Rankings - Week 5

After five weeks of the 2015 college football season, there is no team that has clearly had the best start to the season. No team has shown itself to be clearly performing above the others. Some teams just haven't played anyone difficult yet, so their blowout wins are not that impressive. Other teams have managed to get some impressive wins, but they have also lost a game. Still others have simply had close games against teams that aren't that good, canceling out other impressive wins. As a result, things can change quickly on a week-by-week basis, and it won't take losing a game to knock a team from its top perch. #1 Baylor's 2.8 rating shows its relative weakness in the top spot. For comparision, a clear-cut #1 would have a 1.0 rating. Northwestern, Michigan and Alabama all might just as easily have been placed at the top this week. Yet none of them were in the top four a week ago. Here are the rankings so far as they have sorted out according to our analysis:
