1956 College Football Final Rankings

1956 was the third consecutive season that the Oklahoma Sooners finished the season unbeaten and untied. Not surprisingly, they were awarded the national championship by the major polls. Our analysis agrees - sort of. We think that even though they did lose one game (to the Baylor Bears in the Sugar Bowl), the Tennessee Volunteers had an equally successful season. Remember that in our analysis, each year stands on its own - all teams being treated as equals from the start of the season and ranked based on their performance for that year - so our analysis was not biased in any way by the fact that the Sooners had been undefeated for three consecutive years. It is highly unlikely that voters were able to do the same. (The Sooners did not play in a bowl due to a conference rule that teams could not represent the conference to a bowl in consecutive seasons. A win in a bowl might very well have been enough to break the tie in their favor.)

1957 College Football Final Rankings

1957 had a split national championship. The AP writers' poll picked Auburn University while the UPI coaches' poll chose Ohio State. In part, this was due to the fact that Auburn was on probation for having paid a couple of its players $500 each. Allegedly, it costs a lot more to get players to play for Auburn now. Which poll does out analysis agree with? Would you believe neither? In fact, we don't have either team ranked higher than #5:

1. Arizona State Sun Devils (10-0) - 1.0
2. Navy Midshipmen (9-1-1) - 2.8

1958 College Football Final Rankings

In 1958, the AP and UPI polls crowned the LSU Tigers national champions (before the bowl games). The Football Writers' Association of America disagreed and (after the bowl games) awarded their national championship to the Iowa Hawkeyes (even though the Hawkeyes had lost one game and tied another). Our analysis respectfully disagrees with both.

1959 College Football Final Rankings

In 1959, the major polls (the AP and UPI polls) both ranked undefeated Syracuse as the #1 team in the nation, despite the fact that Ole Miss had blown out practically everyone they played. Mississippi's only loss came to the team the polls ranked #3, the LSU Tigers, a team they had a chance to play again in the Sugar Bowl and beat 21-0. LSU doesn't rank #3 in our analysis, but Ole Miss does get our #1 nod. Here's how the rest of the rankings turn out:

Ranking the College Football Programs of the 60's

We had previously posted that San Diego State had the team of the 60's (or rather 1961-1970). However, with new rules instituted on our decade rankings, the Aztecs are inelligible because they only competed in the top division of college football for two years out of the decade. The minimum number of years to be ranked is three. This reflects a need for consistent success over multiple years in a decade to be so highly ranked. Our updated rankings properly place the Alabama Crimson Tide as the team of the 60's.
Here is the rest of the list:

1. Alabama Crimson Tide
2. Texas Longhorns

1960 College Football Final Rankings

It's all been downhill since 1960 for the New Mexico State Aggies. Our most recent post listed the Aggies as the 150th most successful college program of the last 50 years - out of the 155 teams qualifying for the list. But in 1960, the Aggies went undefeated, beat Utah State in the Sun Bowl, and the program actually captured enough attention to be ranked in the Final Top 20 of both major polls. Our analysis goes a step further than the human polls. The Aggies' wins - while not against major teams - were impressive enough to rank the team #1 in our analysis for the 1960 season. Of course, this is in part due to the fact that no major teams finished the season undefeated. The AP and UPI national champion Minnesota Golden Gophers actually lost two games, in fact.

Only three of the Aggies' games were closer than 20 points - a three-point victory over Arizona State (who finished the season 7-3), a 12-point victory over the UTEP Miners, and the Sun Bowl 7-point victory over Utah State (who finished 9-2 and ranked #10 in our analysis). It was a season the Aggies have not come close to duplicating since.

The Most Successful Top Division College Football Programs of the Past 50 Years

We recently posted our program rankings based on the past 50 years of data. That ranking weighted recent success more heavily, as we felt that a highly ranked program should have a combination of recent success and a tradition of winning. However, another way of ranking the programs is to find out which programs have had the most success overall during the past 50 years. In other words, in the average year during the past 50 years, which teams have had the most success (regardless of whether that success came in 1961 or 2010)?

Figured that way, here are our rankings of the most successful football programs over the last 50 years. In order to be included in the rankings, a college had to sponsor football at the highest division level for at least 5 years during the decades in question. Only those years where the team competed in the top division of NCAA football were included in our calculations. As is our practice, teams are always listed with their most current mascot, even if they had a different mascot during the period of time being ranked. (It's just easier for us to keep track of things that way.)

1964 College Football Final Rankings

In 1964, both Alabama and Arkansas finished the regular season undefeated. Alabama lost its bowl game, while Arkansas won. However, because of the way the polling system worked in 1964, Alabama remained the national champion. (There was no voting after the bowls.) Looking back, which team should actually have won the national title? How about a tie for the championship between Arkansas and ... Notre Dame? That's what our analysis shows:

1. Arkansas Razorbacks (11-0) - 1.6

1965 College Football Final Rankings

1965 was one of those years that would have driven the BCS formula crazy. Going into the bowls, four different teams were undefeated - Michigan State, Nebraska, Arkansas and Dartmouth. (Dartmouth, as an Ivy League school, is problematic for our analysis because Ivy League schools played fewer games than everyone else, and of course, most of these games were against each other. Typically those teams would only schedule two non-conference games and those were usually against smaller, weaker schools - even lower division schools. As a result, it is very difficult to rank an Ivy League school that went undefeated, especially if they won many of their games by a large margin, as Dartmouth did.)

None of the previously referred to undefeated teams played each other in bowl games, and amazingly after the bowls were over, the only remaining undefeated team was Dartmouth (the Ivy League school), which didn't play in a bowl game. All three of the other teams had lost their bowl game. The human polls ended up crowning Alabama, which had one loss and one tie, as the national champion (and Alabama wasn't even one of the undefeated teams heading into the bowls). Did they get it right? Here is what our analysis shows:

1. Michigan State Spartans (10-1) - 1.5

1966 College Football Final Rankings

We continue our historical rankings project with 1966. 1966 was famous for "The Tie" - a "game of the century" between #1 ranked Notre Dame and #2 ranked Michigan State on November 12th that ended in a tie. In the final polls, Notre Dame was ranked 1st and Michigan State was 2nd. But since the teams tied in their only head-to-head contest (a game played in East Lansing), which team actually had the better season? And what about undefeated, untied Alabama that started the season ranked #1 in the preseason polls? To resolve that question, here are the final rankings from our analysis of the 1966 college football season:
