2014 College Football Rankings - Week 10

The results for Week 10 are particularly fascinating. Marshall's #4 ranking despite a weak schedule, Florida State's #11 ranking despite being undefeated and Ole Miss being ranked #1 still, despite two last-second losses to top teams seem to actually legitimize each other. If it doesn't factor in strength of schedule enough (Marshall), how do you explain Ole Miss and Florida State? Ole Miss seems to not be penalized very much for playing and losing close games to top teams. Florida State's schedule is weak, and that's the only way to explain their #11 ranking. Marshall's schedule is also weak, but they are beating all of the teams on their schedule by blowout margins - yet it's not enough for them to be ranked over Ole Miss and Auburn, which both have losses when playing tough schedules. Moral of the story - if you are going to play a relatively weak team, you'd better beat them convincingly and as long as you play them close - even if you lose - playing a strong team won't hurt you so it's worth it.:
